A small amount of wood dust, laminate edging, packaging or other elements on furniture and household items might seem trivial to many. The state of California, however, has taken the issue of ingredients in consumer products to a whole new level with its Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, known as "Proposition 65”.

Proposition 65 is known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act and was passed into law in 1986 by the state of California with the original intent of protecting drinking water sources from chemical contamination. However, since 1986 the scope of the law has grown to include wood dust, laminates and a multitude of other everyday elements.  There are officially over 800 ingredients and chemicals on the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) list of carcinogen or reproductive toxicants. Many of the 800+ chemicals and substances are common ingredients and materials found in common household goods such as jewelry, lamps, ceramic tableware, crystal glasses, electric cords, automobiles, beauty products and furniture.

Since there is a chance of wood dust or one of the other substances listed on Proposition 65 being present in our furniture, we are required to include Proposition 65 warnings on all of our products that ship to California consumers. We are also required to use the exact wording for this warning specified by California:  "This product can expose you to chemicals including [name of California Prop 65 substance (e.g. Wood Dust)], which is known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/furniture."

Like most furniture companies, we manufacture products in large quantities and ship to consumers throughout North America. At the time of production, we cannot know where each item will ship therefore we place these warnings on all of our furniture products.

The safety of our customers and our employees is of highest priority. We want to assure you of our commitment to offering safe products to our industry.  Prepac manufactures all of its products in North America just outside Vancouver, Canada and sources all of its main wood raw materials from USA based mills. All of the mills that we purchase wood from are compliant with all CARB 2 and related California Requirements and none of our products are imported from Asia.
